The island of Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands, an archipelago in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, belonging to Spain. The area is 3640 km² and approximately 858,000 people live there. Mallorca is an administrative unit within the Balearic Islands with its own parliament, the Island Council (Consell Insular). The capital is Palma de Mallorca, which is also the capital of the Balearic Islands. The official languages are Catalan and Spanish, the local Catalan spoken language is Mallorquín. The name Mallorca comes from the Greek settlers who erected the blessed temple to Heracles Maliorcas on the island.
